How Long Does an MOT Take and What Should You Expect?

Standard MOT time
A Class 4 MOT test for a standard car or small van typically takes 45 to 60 minutes from the point the car enters the test bay. This is the time for the tester to work through the full DVSA checklist — lights, brakes, emissions, steering, suspension, tyres, bodywork, and all other components covered by the test.
Larger vehicles, vans with more complex testing requirements, or cars with modifications that need additional checks can take slightly longer. If you are booking for a vehicle that is not a standard family car, let us know and we can give you a more specific time estimate.
What actually happens during the test
The tester works through the DVSA inspection manual in a set sequence. This includes checking all lights and indicators, testing brakes on a rolling road (a plate set into the floor that measures braking force), inspecting the steering, suspension, and chassis on a ramp, checking tyre condition and tread depth, testing emissions through the exhaust, and checking windscreen, mirrors, and seatbelts.
The tester cannot check anything that requires disassembly — so they cannot check internal engine condition, gearbox health, or anything inside a sealed component. The MOT is a check of the vehicle's current condition against minimum roadworthiness standards, not a service or mechanical assessment.
What happens if it fails
An MOT failure means the car has one or more items rated as Major or Dangerous defects. A Major defect means the car can be driven away but needs repair before a new certificate is issued. A Dangerous defect means the examiner considers the car an immediate risk and the recommendation is not to drive it.
If the car fails, we explain each failure item clearly, show you what we found (measurements, photos where relevant), and give you a repair quote before any work is agreed. We can often carry out the repairs the same day or the next morning and arrange a prompt retest. A retest on items we repaired is included or at a low fixed cost.
An MOT failure is not unusual — around one in three cars fail on their first test. Advisories and minor items noted during the test do not cause a failure but are worth monitoring.
How to plan your day around an MOT
A morning booking at 8am typically means the car is through by 9 to 9:30am. Many customers drop off before work and collect during a lunch break. If you would like to wait, there is space at the garage — bring a book or a laptop and the wait is manageable.
You can book your MOT up to one month early (one calendar month minus one day) without losing your existing expiry date. If your MOT expires at the end of May and you test in early May, your next expiry will be end of May the following year — not 12 months from the test date. This flexibility means you can book at a convenient time rather than rushing at the last minute.
