Interim vs Full vs Major Service: Which Does Your Car Need?

The three service types
Most garages offer three levels of car service: interim, full, and major. They are not interchangeable — each is designed for a different interval and covers different work. Choosing the wrong level either leaves maintenance gaps or has you paying for work that is not yet due.
The simplest way to think about them: interim is the top-up between full services, full is the standard annual service, and major includes everything in a full service plus additional filter and component replacements that are only due every two years or more.
Interim service
An interim service is designed for high-mileage drivers — typically those covering more than 12,000 miles per year. If you do that kind of mileage, waiting 12 months between full services leaves your engine running on old, degraded oil for the second half of the year.
An interim service covers an oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, visual brake and tyre check, and around 25 safety inspections. It is carried out every 6 months or 6,000 miles — whichever comes first. For lower-mileage drivers, an interim service is generally not necessary.
Interim service is right for you if:
- You cover more than 12,000 miles per year
- You use your car for frequent short journeys (harder on oil)
- Your manufacturer specifies 6-month intervals
- Your car is due an oil change and a full service is not yet due
Full service
A full service is the standard annual service for most drivers. It covers everything in an interim service plus air filter replacement, a more detailed brake and suspension inspection, coolant hose and auxiliary belt check, and around 40 safety checks in total. It is due every 12 months or 12,000 miles.
The full service is the right choice for most drivers as their once-a-year maintenance visit. If your car has been regularly serviced on a full service schedule, you have covered the essentials. The major service adds the items that are only due every two years or at high mileage.
Major service
A major service is due every 24 months or 24,000 miles and covers everything in a full service plus additional components: pollen filter replacement, spark plug change (petrol) or fuel filter change (diesel) when due, brake fluid replacement, and a deeper check of cooling system, drive shafts, and wheel bearings.
If your car has not been serviced for two or more years, a major service is the right starting point. If it has been regularly serviced annually, a major service becomes relevant when the 24-month or 24,000-mile interval is reached.

Quick comparison
Interim: every 6 months or 6,000 miles — oil, filter, fluids, 25 checks. Full: every 12 months or 12,000 miles — adds air filter, extended inspections, 40 checks. Major: every 24 months or 24,000 miles — adds pollen filter, spark plugs or fuel filter, brake fluid, 60 checks.
