Hay Fever Season and Your Car: How Pollen Affects Cabin Air Filters

What a cabin air filter actually does
The cabin air filter — also called a pollen filter — sits in the ventilation system of your car and filters the air that enters through the blowers. Its job is to trap dust, pollen, spores, and fine particles before they reach the cabin. On cars with a carbon-impregnated filter, it also removes some odours and pollution gases.
Without a functioning cabin filter, everything drawn in through the ventilation system goes directly into the air you breathe inside the car. On a high pollen day, that means a continuous stream of pollen directly into your face from the vents.
How filters degrade over time
A new cabin filter is a dense white or grey mat of fibres. Over a year of use, it accumulates dust, debris, insects, and pollen. A heavily clogged filter does two things: it restricts airflow through the ventilation system (so the blowers feel weaker) and it stops filtering effectively as the pores in the filter material become blocked.
A filter that is clogged with last year's pollen does not trap this year's pollen — it is already saturated. During peak hay fever season, a blocked filter can actually release previously trapped pollen back into the cabin when the blowers run at high speed.
If your air conditioning or heating feels weaker than it used to, a blocked cabin filter is one of the most common and cheapest causes.
How often should the cabin filter be changed
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the cabin filter every 12 to 15 months or every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. In practice, many cars reach major service intervals — 24 months — without the filter being changed. A cabin filter that has not been replaced in two years is almost certainly impeding both airflow and filtration.
If you suffer from hay fever or allergies, changing the cabin filter every 12 months at your annual service, rather than waiting for the major service interval, is a practical step. The cost of a cabin filter replacement is modest.
Carbon filters versus standard filters
Standard cabin filters trap particles — pollen, dust, and debris — but do not address gases or odours. Carbon-impregnated cabin filters add an activated carbon layer that also adsorbs nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and some volatile organic compounds. For hay fever sufferers, a standard filter addresses pollen adequately. For drivers with sensitivities to traffic pollution or strong smells, a carbon filter is the better choice.
The replacement interval for carbon filters is the same as for standard filters, but the cost is slightly higher. We can advise on the right filter for your car and symptoms when you book in.
Getting it done in Bromsgrove
Cabin filter replacement is typically done as part of a major service but can be carried out at any time as a standalone job. It takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the car. If your hay fever has been bad in the car this season, or if the ventilation system feels weak, call The Car Guys on 01527 336608 or book online and we will have it sorted the same day in most cases.
