What's Included in a Full Car Service in the UK?

What a full service is
A full car service — sometimes called an annual service — is a comprehensive maintenance check and fluid replacement typically carried out every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. It goes beyond the oil and filter change of an interim service to include air filter replacement, additional fluid checks, and a broader inspection of safety-critical components.
There is no single national standard for what a full service includes — different garages use different checklists. The items below represent what a thorough, properly conducted full service should cover.
What is always included
At a minimum, every full service should include an engine oil and filter change using the correct grade for your engine, an air filter replacement, and a check of all fluid levels including coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and screenwash. The service indicator light should be reset if the vehicle has one.
Core full service items:
- Engine oil drain and refill with correct grade oil
- Oil filter replacement
- Air filter replacement
- Cabin pollen filter inspection — replaced at major service intervals
- Coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and screenwash checked and topped up
- Fuel filter visual check (replaced at major service on many cars)
- Tyre pressures set and tread depth checked
- Brake pad thickness and disc condition inspected
- Lights, horn, and windscreen wipers tested
- Visual check of exhaust, suspension components, and steering joints
- Battery condition check
- Service book stamped and service indicator reset
What goes beyond the basics
A properly conducted full service should also check timing belt condition and mileage against the manufacturer's replacement interval. This is not part of the service cost — timing belt replacement is a separate job — but flagging it at a service prevents it being forgotten until it fails. Brake fluid condition should be tested for moisture content; brake fluid absorbs water over time and its boiling point falls. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every two years.
Coolant hoses, auxiliary belts, and shock absorbers should be visually inspected. These components wear gradually and are easy to miss until they fail. An exhaust visual check should identify blows, corrosion, or loose hangers.
What a full service does not include
A full service is not a repair and does not include replacing parts beyond filters and fluids. If the inspection identifies worn brake pads, a split CV boot, or a failing battery, these will be quoted separately. An honest garage distinguishes clearly between what is included in the service price and what is being recommended as additional work.
A full service also does not include an MOT. The two are often combined but are separate processes with separate fees. The MOT tests legal roadworthiness; the service addresses maintenance and longevity.
At The Car Guys, our full service includes a written advisory report of anything we find that needs attention — with no obligation to carry out any additional work until you agree.
