When Is My MOT Due?

Understanding MOT requirements

The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. It ensures your car meets minimum safety and environmental standards. Understanding when your MOT is due and what it involves helps you stay legal and safe on the road.

The quick rule

Your first MOT is due when your car is three years old, then every year after that. The date is based on when your car was first registered, not when you bought it.

You can test up to a month early (one month minus one day) and keep the same renewal date. This gives you flexibility to book at a convenient time without losing any validity period.

What the MOT covers

The MOT test checks your vehicle meets legal safety and environmental standards. It's not a comprehensive mechanical check, but it does examine essential safety components.

Key areas tested

The MOT inspector will check numerous components across your vehicle:

  • Lights and indicators – all must work correctly
  • Steering and suspension – for wear and damage
  • Brakes – efficiency and condition
  • Tyres and wheels – tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and condition
  • Seatbelts – all must be present and functional
  • Bodywork – excessive corrosion or damage
  • Windscreen and mirrors – chips, cracks, and visibility
  • Exhaust system – leaks and noise levels
  • Emissions – CO and other pollutants must be within limits
  • Fuel system – leaks and secure fittings
  • Registration plates – must be readable and correctly displayed

If you miss your MOT

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal and can have serious consequences. Understanding the rules helps you avoid fines and stay safe.

Consequences of driving without an MOT:

  • Fines of up to £1,000
  • Invalidated insurance – your policy may not cover you
  • Vehicle seized by police
  • Points on your licence
  • Increased risk of breakdown or accident due to undetected faults

If your MOT has expired, you can only drive to a pre-booked MOT test appointment. You cannot drive for any other reason, including commuting to work or running errands.

MOT results explained

After your MOT test, you'll receive one of three results:

Pass

Your vehicle meets all legal requirements. You'll receive a certificate valid for 12 months from the test date.

Fail

Your vehicle has one or more dangerous or major defects. You cannot drive it until these are repaired and the vehicle passes a retest.

Advisories

These are minor issues that don't cause a failure now but may become problems in the future. Common advisories include worn tyres approaching the limit, minor corrosion, or brake pads getting low.

We make it easy

At The Car Guys, we understand that MOT testing can feel stressful. We make the process straightforward and transparent.

We will remind you when your MOT is due, book you in quickly at a time that suits you, and explain any advisories in plain English. If your car fails, we can often carry out repairs the same day and arrange a quick retest.

Tip: Book your MOT a few weeks before it expires. This gives you time to address any issues without the pressure of an expired certificate.
