The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines fitted to the Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT — and the VW Golf, Passat and Scirocco — from around 2008 to 2012 are well known for heavy oil consumption. Owners find themselves adding a litre every thousand miles or even less. The main cause is the design of the piston rings used at the time, which clog with carbon and stop scraping oil off the cylinder walls.
It matters for more than the cost of oil. An engine that burns oil fouls its spark plugs, carbons up its valves and can run dangerously low between checks. Timing chains and bearings suffer on engines that are quietly running a litre or two under.
Not every thirsty TFSI has the ring problem. A failed crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, a leaking turbo seal or simple external leaks can all look similar. So we start with a measured consumption test — fill to the correct level, seal the dipstick, and check again after a set mileage — and inspect the PCV system before talking about bigger work.
If the rings are the cause, the proper fix is replacing the pistons and rings with the revised design, which is a major engine job. On a higher-mileage car that may not make financial sense, and we will say so. Sometimes the honest answer is to keep a close eye on the level and budget for the future.

- Does the problem affect newer Audis?
- The worst of it was on engines built around 2008 to 2012. Audi revised the pistons and rings, and later engines are much better.
