Jaguar Land Rover introduced its own 2.0 litre Ingenium diesel from 2015, fitting it to the Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Jaguar XE, XF and F-Pace. The early engines in particular have a reputation for timing chain stretch. As the chain lengthens, the camshaft timing drifts, and eventually the chain can jump or break.
Symptoms include a rattle or whine from the engine, an engine management light with camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes, and in some cases rough running or a loss of power. Long oil change intervals and oil diluted by diesel from DPF regeneration are thought to make it worse, so short-journey cars are more at risk.
We read the Land Rover fault codes and correlation values to judge how far the chain has stretched before we quote. If the chain is within limits, we will tell you, and suggest shorter oil change intervals to protect it. If it is not, it needs replacing before it fails.
The Ingenium's chain is at the rear of the engine, so replacing it is a substantial job. We replace the chain, guides and tensioner together and use the correct timing tools, then clear the codes and confirm the correlation values are back in range.
