DSG Gearbox Service

DSG is Volkswagen Group's twin-clutch automatic, badged S tronic on Audis and found across VW, SEAT and Skoda. There are two main families. The six-speed DQ250 and seven-speed DQ381 and DQ500 use wet clutches running in oil, and the oil and filter must be changed at a fixed interval — usually every 40,000 miles. The seven-speed DQ200, fitted to smaller petrol engines like the 1.4 TSI, uses dry clutches and has sealed-for-life oil in the gearbox.

Skipped DSG services are one of the commonest reasons we see harsh shifts, judder and mechatronic faults on wet-clutch gearboxes. The oil carries away clutch material and heat, and old oil lets the valves in the mechatronic unit — the gearbox's hydraulic brain — stick and wear. A mechatronic unit or clutch pack costs many times more than a service.

The DQ200 dry gearbox has its own well-known problems: judder pulling away in first and reverse, jerky low-speed shifts and mechatronic accumulator or pressure faults. These are diagnosed rather than serviced — we read the gearbox data, check clutch wear values and run adaptations before recommending clutch or mechatronic work.

Our DSG service uses the correct specification oil, a new filter where fitted, the right fill procedure at the right temperature, and a basic setting (adaptation) afterwards so the clutches bite where they should.
