Two groups of Volkswagen Group petrol engines are known for timing chain trouble. The first is the early EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI — Golf GTI Mk6, Audi A3, A4, A5, TT and Skoda Octavia vRS from roughly 2008 to 2012 — where the original chain tensioner could let the chain slacken. The second is the small 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (EA111) in the Polo, Golf, Fabia and Ibiza from around 2009 to 2012, where the chain itself stretched.
The warning sign on both is a rattle for a second or two after a cold start, sometimes with an engine light and camshaft position codes. It is easy to ignore because it goes away. But if the tensioner gives up or the chain stretches far enough, the chain can jump a tooth and the valves hit the pistons.
We check the chain before quoting. On the EA888 we read the camshaft-to-crankshaft deviation values, which show how far the chain has stretched, and check which tensioner is fitted. On the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI we listen, read the timing values and inspect the chain where needed.
When the chain needs replacing we fit the updated chain, tensioner and guides as a kit, with new seals and bolts where the manufacturer requires them, and set the timing with the correct locking tools.

- Is a short rattle on start-up really a problem?
- On these engines, yes. It is often the tensioner letting the chain slap before oil pressure builds. It is worth checking before it gets worse.
- Which engines are affected?
- Mainly the early 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI (EA888) up to around 2012 and the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (EA111) from around 2009 to 2012. Later engines use revised parts.
- Can I just replace the tensioner?
